After Setsubun at the start of the month (a celebration in Japan marking the end of Winter and the start of Spring), we've been feeling the hint of Spring in the air on some days and have seen many changes in how we work, play, and interact with our friends!
Setsubun filled the classroom with little Oni (ogres), scaring away bad luck and bringing in all that is good into the classroom and our lives!

We have been looking at animals that live in the Arctic region. We compared our hands to a polar bear's paw and found that they can swim in such cold water because of their warm coats. Narwhals were our favourite animal with their long horns.

We celebrated World Whale Day by looking at different whales and enjoyed reading The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldsons. Having a large pet snail come to visit was exciting! After finding out that Beluga whales have teeth, a few of us wondered whether our goldfish have teeth. Crowding around the fishbowl with magnifying glass in hand, we wished that the goldfish would stay still while we searched for some teeth! No teeth....

Valentine's Day gave us plenty of cutting practice
as we made beautiful Valentines to take home to everyone we love! Our strawberry pies were so tasty, and we had enough to share with our families.
Many new art activities that require concentration and allow us to take a quiet moment while we work have appeared on the shelves. Making friendship bracelets have been very popular and using water colours to paint different leaf shapes has shown us all how to create subtle changes in colours as we paint.
We have so many exciting activities planned for the Spring and we look forward to sharing these with you next month!
